Hoe vaak moet je je hond wassen? Gids op ras en vachtsoort

"How often can I wash my dog?" This is the most asked question to veterinarians after "what did he eat?". The answer is not universal: it depends on the breed, type of coat, lifestyle and skin condition. Here is a practical guide to not make a mistake.

The basic rule: 1 to 2 times a month

For a healthy dog, who lives mainly indoors or walks on clean paths, the ideal frequency is 1 to 2 baths per month. This is enough to maintain the coat without destroying the natural hydrolipidic film.

Below once a month, the dog can begin to "smell the dog" (especially breeds with long hair or dense under-haired). Beyond 2 times a month, you may dry out the skin and cause itching.

By type of coat

Short Hair (Labrador, Beagle, Boxer, Pug)

Once a month. The short hair does not retain dirt and dries quickly. A weekly dry brushing often even avoids bathing.

Mid-length hair (Golden Retriever, Setter, Border Collie)

1 to 2 times a month. The underbrile retains odors and dirt, especially in summer and during the moulting period (spring and autumn).

Long Hair (Yorkshire, Shih Tzu, Bichon, Poodle)

Once a week to once every 2 weeks. The long hair knots, retains dust and chews. Mandatory daily brushing + more frequent bathing.

Hard hair (Schnauzer, Westie, Cairn Terrier)

1 time per month maximum. Hard hair has a natural protection that too frequent washing softens. Give preference to brushing and manual stripping.

Without hair (Chinese ridge dod, Xolo)

Once a week. Without hair to absorb sebum, the skin needs to be washed more often - but with a very soft and fragrance-free shampoo.

By lifestyle

  • Indoor dog, urban walks: 1 time per month

  • Dog walking in the forest, in the mountains: 1 to 2 times a month

  • Hunting dog, active dog: 2 to 3 times a month (after muddy outings)

  • Bathing dog (ponds, sea): rinse with clean water after each swim, real shampoo 1–2 times a month

  • Puppy: not before 2 months except emergency; then once a month with a very mild shampoo

Situations where it is necessary to wash outside the schedule

  • After contact with a poop, vomit, a carcass
  • After a bath in dirty water (stagnant pond)
  • Before a visit to the veterinarian (courtesy)
  • In case of visible infestation (fles, ticks) — with a prescribed suitable shampoo

The right shampoo for regular baths

If you wash your dog more than once a month, the choice of shampoo becomes critical. Opt for a shampoo with a balanced pH, fragrance-free, alcohol-free. Our fragrance-free Gust Care range is specifically designed for frequent use without drying out the skin. 500 mL format to test, 1 L for a family with an average dog over 4 to 6 months.
