My dog scratches after bathing: 5 possible causes and what to do
Partager
You have just washed your dog, he comes out of the bath soaked and a little crumpled, and 10 minutes later... he scratches. He even bites himself. He even stays on the spot. Don't panic - it's very common and almost always adjustable. Here are the 5 most likely causes and what to do for each one.
1. The shampoo is too fragrant
This is the #1 cause. Synthetic fragrances and essential oils (even "natural") are known irritants for dogs with sensitive skin. If your dog always scratches after bathing, change to a fragrance-free shampoo. In 80% of cases, the problem disappears in 2-3 baths.
2. The rinse was incomplete
Shampoo residues trapped in the thick coat trigger itching and dandruff within 24 to 72 hours. To check: run your wet hand through the coat - if it still slides like soap, it's not over. Rinse twice as long as you think necessary, especially under the belly, behind the ears and between the pads.
3. The skin has become too dry (washing too often)
Washing your dog more than once every 2 weeks routinely destroys the hydrolipidic film that protects its skin. Result: dry skin, dandruff, itching. Space the baths once a month as a routine, and use a balanced pH shampoo.
4. A contact allergy (textile, grass, parasites)
If the itching persists despite a shampoo change, the problem may come from elsewhere: bath towel washed with scented laundry detergent, contact with a new plant in the garden, fleas that appear with the heat. Check the backspoil coat: presence of blackheads (flew excrement) or small pimples?
5. An underlying atopic dermatitis
If the dog scratches after each bath regardless of the shampoo used, and these itching is chronic (not only post-bath), it can be atopic dermatitis - a common skin disease in dogs (10 to 15% of dogs). In this case, consult your veterinarian: he will prescribe an adapted medical shampoo (often one without a mild fragrance as a base, plus a specific active ingredient).
The right reflex: test a fragrance-free shampoo
First of all, try 2–3 baths with a fragrance-free dog shampoo with neutral pH. It is the simplest, fastest solution, and solves most cases. If itching persists beyond 3 baths, make an appointment with the veterinarian.
